Battlefords Wildlife Federation Nature Centre Business Hours

Ever wanted to spy on a goose nest by remote camera or learn about animals and plants that inhabit the picturesque North Saskatchewan River Valley? These experiences and more are available at the Battlefords Wildlife Federation Nature Centre, located just southwest of the City of North Battleford.

Nestled in the heart of the Aspen Parkland between the boreal forests and the prairies, the centre is home to a wealth of plants and animal species. Learn about the birds and mammals that live in the river valley by examining a large exhibit of taxidermy specimens. You can also wander through the grounds and learn about native plants and then stay for a picnic on the hill as you enjoy the panoramic view of the river valley.

Battle River Settlement Foundation Walking Tour Contact Info

The rich history of the Battlefords is only a short walk away. The Battle River Settlement Foundation has produced a series of self-guided walking and geolog tours in the Battlefords and surrounding area.

In the old town of Battleford, a scenic walking tour takes in Fort Battleford National Historic Site, Telegraph Flat, old Government House and a number of other buildings and structures dating back to 1885 and earlier.

In the city of North Battleford, a walking tour of no less than 92 homes, public and private buildings portray the city's railway beginnings in early 1900.

Battlefords Geology Tour

For those who want to go back in time even further, a 19-stop tour of the geological formations of the area provide an insight into surrounding hills, rivers, lakes, levees, sand dunes, boreal forest and an ancient glacial spillway.

Information is also available on the plants and and animals indigenous to Finlayson Island via interpretive nature trails. The Island is located on the North Saskatchewan River seperating Battleford and North Battleford.

Tombstone of Notorious Outlaw - Sam Kelly Contact Info

Finlayson Island Year round Nature Park Contact Info

Finlyason Island is located on the North Saskatchewan River between the arched bridges connecting North Battleford with Battleford. The island is named in honour of Don Matheson Finlayson. Finlayson Island has a variety of nature trails and is a great place to hike, ski or picnic. The wide variety of flora and fauna along with the wildlife make it an unique recreational opportunity for all to enjoy

At the observation tower on the west side of North Battleford, the North Shore Trail runs along the northern shores of the North Saskatchewan River to two km beyond the modern water treatment plant. You can also see where the North Saskatchewan River and the Battle River Converge along the trail. Trails are groomed in Winter for skiing, mowed in summer for walking and each year the Saskatchewan Mountain Bike Provincial Cup is held around the Saskatchewan Hospital area.
